If you can't stand it, you've got to fix it.
I just returned from (finally!) watching "Brokeback Mountain" this afternoon with a friend. My friend Y. is hetero (I mean, she's like a Kinsey zero) but genderqueer. There's never a dull moment hanging out with her because she morphs from soft butch to stone butch to John Wayne and back. We had a fantastic, - nay, fabulous! - talk about gender and sexuality before the movie. After, we were just too stunned by the film to speak.
Yes, "Brokeback" is every bit as good as people say it is. It is beautifully done, very faithful to the original story, and extremely moving.
In Anne Proulx's tragic formulation, "If you can't fix it, you've got to stand it." This reality has been a fact of life for queer people for far too long. We've made enormous progress against homophobia in recent years but we've still got a long way to go.
I've just come across another variation of the "gay people are narcissistic" meme in a certain corner of the political blogosphere. This assertion was made by a practicing psychologist. I can only wonder how many lesbian, gay, or (G-d forbid) transgender clients this guy has treated. Do they know what attitudes they're going to be dealing with from their therapist? And why would any queer person in their right mind seek help from someone like this?
Anyway, I am really really pissed right now. I'm going to sit down and write a post on homophobia at my political blog, as soon as I'm sane enough to do so. Meanwhile, I'm going to go to the gym and let off some steam. (Hey, you know how narcissistic we are, right?)
