Correction of the Day

An article on Wednesday about four victims of the terrorist bombing in a Jerusalem market on July 30 referred incorrectly to shiva, the seven-day Jewish mourning period. It should not have been described as a wake, which is a watch over the corpse; by Jewish custom the dead are buried within 24 hours. Visitors paying condolence calls should not have been described as ''sitting shiva,'' which describes the weeklong vigil performed only by the bereaved family.
Because of an editing error, the article also misstated another funeral custom: mourners' clothing was rent -- that is, torn -- not rented.
