On the Hebrew calendar, it's the beginning of a new week, and on the Gregorian, the beginning of a new year - or Sylvester, as the Gregorian New Year is called in Israel and elsewhere.
It's been another year of working from home, and while earning a paycheck from the comfort of my own quarters is all very lovely, after almost three years it's starting to feel like too much of a good thing. I'm going stir crazy. So, without making any premature moves or burning any bridges, I am keeping my eyes open for the right opportunity to get back to working in the office.
Despite all that, though, the biggest stride I've made in the past year was getting a lot more socially active on a regular basis, both in politics and outside of it. It was just last January (though it seems like a lot longer than a year) that I was asked to join the leadership team of this County's GOP chapter as Community Engagement Chair. This meant learning a lot of things 'on the fly', but I'm comfortable with the role and looking forward to my second year doing it. My duties include organizing our presence at community events such as the County Fair. This means filling out forms, getting our Treasurer to pay the booth and insurance fees, organizing volunteer schedules, and so on. Last year I was basically doing the job by myself, but this year I'll have a couple of folks helping me. That's good, because we expect to be busy, and I am planning to get us into some venues where we haven't been previously.
I've also gotten involved in an election integrity group, which is another thing where I'm learning as I go. Fortunately I live quite close to the County Election Offices, which made it easy for me to volunteer as an election observer this past November and to bond with the other volunteers.
And I've started going to Meetup groups regularly. The ones I attend are mostly just social - get together with a bunch of people for food and drinks and chit-chat at a local restaurant or bar. There's a very active group in my area that was started just last summer, and it's meeting 2 - 3 times a week.
So, I'm hoping 2023 will continue this trend. I've made the usual mental lists of "things I want to accomplish this year", but the main one is to spend more time around people.
