I started the new job 3 weeks ago, and I'm very pleased with the position. It's the same type of work I've been doing for the past 4 years now - IT support - but a little more technically advanced now, and a pay increase of about 8.5 pct over my previous position. Also, I like that I'm now working in an industry (engineering / aerospace / defanse) that I have some connection with.
I spent the afternoon of Independence Day with some friends from a conservative meetup group I've been active in for a few years. The host was Sherry, and the emcee was Brian - both good friends I've known from the meetups for some time now. Most of the guests were Republicans, but the lady seated to my left - who'd had a brief fling with the left in her college days - confided that she's still a registered Democrat. (She was not the only Democrat present at the event: Brian played a recording of JFK's magnificent reading of the Declaration of Independence. I confess it gave me goosebumps.)
The ceremony was modeled on Dennis Prager's idea for a 'Fourth of July Seder'. I will confess I initially found the idea a bit silly. But the other guests did not - we had at least 20 people there - and took it quite seriously. We had fun, companionship, and great conversation.
My new duties in the local party chapter have been keeping my busy; these include setting up volunteer schedules for events like the upcoming County Fair, where we'll have a booth.
