Tigard is a city in Washington County, located about 12 miles southeast of where I live. (The name always makes me imagine a big cat that's half striped and half spotted, but the city is named for the Tigard family who were among its settlers in the 1850s.) I visit Tigard from time to time for community events, such as the monthly conservative forum, and I found myself there for that reason last Thursday evening. I realized that my trip had taken me very close to the Chabad of Tigard, which I had not yet visited, so on a random impulse I made a quick detour to Chabad and happened to find a class on the weekly Torah reading in session. Rabbi Orenstein invited me in, and we had a nice chat afterwards.

It was my first time meeting Rabbi Orenstein in person, although we had connected via social media some weeks before. And I would soon have the opportunity to see him again!

Yesterday (Sunday) was Rabbi Orenstein's commissioning as a Chaplain in the Oregon Army National Guard. I had the honor and pleasure of attending the ceremony, and of meeting the Rabbi's family (wife + 4 young children) for the first time. We learned that Rabbi Orenstein will be the very first Jewish Chaplain to serve in the Oregon National Guard.

So, despite the disruptions to my work life, community life goes on.
