Marjory Asher was a friend and sometime girlfriend with whom I shared a birthday and a name. We stayed in touch after I left Portland, but I hadn't heard back from her for months. Now I know why.

I'll post a little more later. Right now I'm just stunned. It's been almost a year since she left us; don't know why it took me that long to do a google on her, but there you go.

She was found in the Willamette River.

The household finances are hanging on by a shoestring, but we're keeping it together. Expecting significant bucks from a couple of sources within the next 4 - 6 weeks. Meanwhile, just keepin' on keepin' on.

We are starting to work with a financial planner - something I've been wanting to do for a while - and this will be a huge help in budgeting for the coming year. Meanwhile I'm bringing in a few extra bucks doing household work for a friend.

The creative juices are flowing again and more episodes of TQC are in the works. After long deliberation, I decided to put a crow in the last episode ( http://asher63.livejournal.com/232277.html ). I'm thinking there are crows on Shakti, and various other kinds of regular birds and wildlife. That is, it's a planet in an alternate universe that developed an ecosystem largely parallel to Earth's. (For that matter, Earth's ecology is amazingly diverse. New Zealand is almost its own planet! There are almost no indigenous mammals there. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biodiversity_of_New_Zealand ) Anyway, I decided to go with Ron Moore's philosophy for Battlestar Galactica and not rack my brains trying to make everything exotic and alien, which would just end up being a distraction - as RDM says, I don't want you sitting there going "So that's what a chair looks like!"

Right now G is sleeping in, and Our Little Bundle Of Insomnia is playing happily in her crib. We've taken her off the Enfamil and she's eating lots of solid food now; her first birthday is coming up in - yikes! - less than a week.

It's cold. I don't like cold mornings, but hey, that's life. Looking forward to relaxing and taking some downtime. Looking for a place will now be my "day job".

Currently I'm staying with B, who is my BFF and with whom I can share amazingly small quarters without us getting on each other's nerves. She is teh awesome.

I can haz Blackberry! My first encounter with the BB a few months ago proved overwhelming and I gave up on it after a week. This time round it's going much better and I am turning into a major CrackBerry addict.

Here where B lives (Sutter/Fillmore) is a nice neighborhood, funky but not a ghetto, busy but not overcrowded. Looking forward to getting out and walking around a bit next week.

Thinking I might start posting on Flickr and 23 again.

I am a morning person and a compulsive early riser (typically five o'clock). But some mornings I like to just lie in bed.

This is one of those mornings.

Things I miss:

Powell's Books.

The Blue Moon; and McMenamin's, generally.

23rd Avenue. Yes, even though it's yuppified.

Fred Meyer.

TriMet.

My old apartment, the Commodore.

The bridges.

Pioneer Square. It used to be a ten-minute walk from my front door.

Morrison Street.

Michael of http://www.michaeltotten.com/ . Drinks with Michael and the gang at the Horse Brass on Belmont.

Walkable streets.

Those summers. After the rain that seems to never end ... oh God, those summers.

Polite people.

The Mercury (for people who are toooooo hip for the WW!).

That coffee house with no name on Burnside and Trinity.

MAX to the airport.

The river.

Washington Park.

Peterson's.

The library; especially the Central Library on SW 10th Avenue. I like a library that looks like a library.

City just the right size, reasonable cost of living.

Walkable streets.

Free Wi-Fi.

Old friends.

Good night, good night,
May you fly among the bright stars.

Good night, good night,
May you breathe the breath of life.

Good night, good night,
May you drink the waters of the Infinite.

Good night, good night,
May you return in peace to the homeworld.

A good night, a good flight,
a good life, a good night.

Good night, good night,
May you dwell ever among the living.

Some time ago I mentioned the dragon dishes I inherited from my grandmother. Well, in the process of unpacking and re-packing I've come across my mother's old china set (Limoges), which was somewhat discolored when I took it out of the box but That's Why The Good Lord Created Dishwashers.

Also I unearthed a commemorative plate from the Corliss Street Baptist Church, marking the church's centennial in 1958. This would have been right near my mother's childhood home, which I remember her saying was on Corliss Street. (The church itself, however, is located on Middle Street.)

Almost half a century later, the church is still going strong, and they even have a website (Corliss Street Baptist Church).

The picture on the website looks just like the one on the plate!

The church plate ... )

I'm taking four days off (yesterday and next Monday thru Wednesday) from my job at Hotel California, just to rest up and maybe do the Passover thing.

(BTW, Hotel California isn't a hotel. I just call it that because when I first started working there they warned me that I'd better not even think about quitting. So, I can never leave.)

I'll save the irritating and genuinely bizarre office politics of HoCal for another post. Anyway, it's a job, and it pays ... if not exactly well, at least something. And it's work that fits in well with the rest of what's on my resume.

Anyway, the rest was much needed. I think a lot of background anxiety was coming from, or being aggravated by, fatigue.

Oh! And! I'm dating regularly. So lots of good things are happening.

There's a great coffee shop on the corner of Burnside and Trinity. It's locally owned and operated, the folks there are waaay cool and they know everything there is to know about coffee, and they make the best damn shot of espresso in Portland.

Here's a couple of pictures from the inside:

A couple of months ago, a Starbucks opened up across the street. Here's the Starbucks, same afternoon:

I've never been inside, but that Starbucks looks like a great place to go ... if you're looking for a little peace and quiet.
