Delvis Deniu hugged herself unconsciously as the magnetic lift shot upward. The glass walls gave an all-round view of the starry sky, with the Galaxy sprawled across the blackness like an armada of invading ships. Here on the Periphery, the Galaxy always had a menacing look, Delvis thought.
The lift slowed and the door opened, and Delvis stepped onto the walkway towards the Mayor's office. She was immediately flanked by two silent robots armed with blasters, which, though holstered, were enough to unsettle her further.
Mayor Sedna Solaris was a short, stocky woman with blue hair pulled back in a severe bun; she smoked a large cigar, which she balanced between her index and middle fingers between puffs in a display of precision. It was only from the smell of the smoke that Delvis knew she was looking at the real Mayor, and not a projection from the player.
