asher553Most of what we know about the world, we learn from other people. It follows that our ability to understand the world depends on our ability to understand people.
I was a mess as a kid growing up. I didn't even fit in with the misfits. I came from a family with a lot of problems, and I had a lot of problems myself.
I was one of those kids who did well on puzzles and aptitude tests. In first grade they had me take some tests, looked at the numbers, and sent a specialist in to administer some more tests. Let's just say my scores were comfortably above average. After that, they stuck me in a corner behind a partition and gave me a book about ancient Egypt to read.
But I didn't want to go through life sitting alone in a corner. I didn't want to be one of those smart people with a messed-up life. Whatever I might have going for me in the IQ department, I wanted to put my brain to work figuring out how to make my life un-messed-up.
So I never won a Nobel Prize, or became an astronaut, or discovered the cure for cancer, or even graduated college. And I'm OK with that. I wouldn't trade the life I've got, the things I've learned, and the connections I've made with people.
