It was just a dot in the sky overhead. Zeb spotted it first, 'cause he'd been on his back the whole time with nothing to do but stare up at the sky. Me and Seth had gotten his ankle in a splint, but we were still waiting on a couple more men to arrive from the camp to carry him back. And that was when Zeb spotted the drone.
It must have had a view of the whole valley, down to the lake where we got our water and all the way up the sides of the surrounding hills. Some years back, before all the trouble started, there was a story about an old man who lived with his woman in a cabin in the woods not far from the lake. They had laid up a store of gold, it must have been a sizeable amount, nobody knew how they came by it. But one day they got to arguing and his lady took a shotgun and gave him both barrels right in the face. After that, they say she took blankets and sheets and wrapped up his body together with all the gold, took the rowboat out into the middle of the lake and hove the body over the side, sent him straight to the bottom along with all the gold. Didn't want no part of him nor the gold neither. Nobody ever found the gold 'cause nobody knows how deep the lake is. [248]
